^[1]För några dagar sedan fick vi höra att inspelningen av The Hobbit ännu inte hade fått grönt ljus på grund av MGMs ekonomiska svårigheter (samma svårigheter som stoppat den nya James Bond-filmen). Ändå fick vi höra att pre-production hade börjat och att det mesta av modeller och varelser hade blivit designade samt att premiärdatumet december 2012 kvarstod. Således kunde man trots allt pusta ut.

Men ack, så lätt skulle det inte bli; i natt hoppade regissören Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pans labyrint) av projektet. Anledningen var förstås att det drog ut på tiden, han hade gått med på att bo i Nya Zeeland i tre år och det är väl mycket för vem som helst. Därutöver har han andra filmprojekt på gång, som man inte ständigt kan skjuta på framtiden.

Man får försöka se det hela positivt. Han kvarstår som medförfattare till manus och mycket har som sagt redan designats (del Toros fantasi är det ju inget fel på). Vem ska då ta över efter honom? Det vet vi inte än, vi kan dock vara säkra på en sak: det blir inte Peter Jackson – han är upptagen på annat håll.

In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming The Hobbit, I am faced with the hardest decision of my life.After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I’ve been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wish the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director.
